Julien Girard is a French factory worker in his early thirties. His older brother, Gaston Girard enlisted in the army as soon as war broke out. during the chaos of the "lightning war" his brother was declared "missing in acton" by the French government... but somewhere deep inside, Julien knows his brother is still out there. Julien continues to work in the former bycicle factory which has been re-tooled to repair trains and spare parts for train engines for the nazis, despite the fact that many would rather starve than help the organization that killed so many of their countrymen. Julien, however is left with little choice in order to keep his two aging parents fed and taken care of in uncertain times.
when Marquis operatives from the surrounding countryside approached the factory workers in private, Julien offered to lead the partisans during the day to a railway junction not far from the factory. the group of five had just planted a small amount of mining explosives underneath the tracks when a german patrol discovered them. the partisans opened fire and Julien scrambled to cover next to the detonator. the germans advanced quickly despite their losses and the outnumbered partisans were about to flee when Julien detonated the explosives sending a shrapnel flying through the air, killing sevral nazis in the process.
when the smoke settled, only two partisans were left, but at least a dozen germans were lying in the dirt. "you're one of us now, citizen", the marquis leader said while handing him an mp40 from a fallen german, "for the blood you've spilt you are rewarded the spoils of war"
